28 February 2025
Ashgabat, February 24, 2025 – The UNODC Regional Youth Network in Central Asia for Turkmenistan, in collaboration with the youth-led initiative Creative Corner Turkmenistan, successfully hosted an interactive Digital Skills and Media Literacy Workshop at the UN House in Ashgabat. The event gathered over 30 participants, ranging in age from 14 to 40, reflecting a dynamic mix of young minds eager to navigate the evolving digital landscape with confidence and responsibility.
The workshop was designed to equip participants with essential digital skills, enhance their media literacy, and raise awareness about substance use prevention in digital spaces. Through a series of engaging presentations, group discussions, and hands-on exercises, attendees explored:
- Digital Skills Development – Understanding digital tools and platforms to enhance online engagement.
- Media Literacy – Learning how to critically evaluate media sources, identify misinformation, and verify facts.
- Substance Use Prevention Online – Recognizing harmful content and promoting digital well-being.

What set this workshop apart was its practical and interactive approach. Participants took part in real-life scenario-based exercises, where they applied newly acquired media literacy skills to assess online information critically. Group activities encouraged teamwork and problem-solving, ensuring that learning extended beyond theory into real-world application.
Shukurgeldi Myradov, the leader and Focal Point of the UNODC Regional Youth Network for Turkmenistan emphasized the importance of digital responsibility in preventing substance abuse:
“In today’s fast-paced digital world, media literacy and critical thinking are essential. Young people are increasingly exposed to misleading content online, including misinformation related to drugs and harmful behaviors. This workshop aimed to provide a unique platform for participants to enhance their skills, become responsible digital citizens, and understand how to recognize and counter online content that promotes drug abuse.”
Adding to this, Abdyrahim Agajykov, speaker of the workshop and founder of the Creative Corner Turkmenistan highlighted the workshop’s strong alignment with creative thinking and innovation:
“Creativity isn’t just about making art—it’s about how we think, solve problems, and approach information. In an era of digital overload, it is crucial that young people learn how to think critically, question sources, and use digital tools in innovative ways. This workshop empowered participants to apply creativity not just in media, but in everyday decision-making.”

The workshop’s impact was clear: participants walked away with stronger digital skills, a heightened ability to navigate online spaces safely, and a deeper understanding of how to counter misinformation. The event underscored the importance of fostering youth-led initiatives that empower communities and strengthen digital resilience.
With its success, the UNODC Regional Youth Network in Central Asia remains committed to expanding similar opportunities, ensuring that more young people in can thrive in the digital age.
