Representatives of local administrations and communities from Akhal region discuss efficient use of water resources for climate-resilient development at the local level

Ashgabat, 11 April 2025. Over 20 representatives of local administrations from Akhal region, including practitioners and members of local and Afghan communities living in this area enhanced their knowledge and skills on the efficient application of traditional and innovative technologies for conservation, extraction and use of water resources, as well as irrigation system management at the farm level for climate-resilient local development at a two-day seminar organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the Gurbandurdy gengeshlik in Tejen district of Akhal region on April 7-8, 2025.

IOM national experts introduced the seminar participants to the organizational-legal frameworks for water use, technical solutions for modernization of irrigation systems to improve water supply and use at the farm level and shared the experiences of Water User Groups established in Akhal region. In the interactive group sessions, the participants discussed agricultural crop water consumption and irrigation regimes, and made an analysis of the efficiency of use of irrigation water by example of local farmers.
“This seminar was useful in terms of learning about technologies and successful practical solutions with which I will be able to conduct water measurements and water metering and use water efficiently in my farm," tenant farmer of the Gurbandurdy gengeshlik Bazar Habibulla said.
During the practical sessions, the participants focused on methods and technologies for water measurement and metering, assessment of field planning and got acquainted with the methods and techniques of irrigation used by local farmers.

The seminar was conducted within the framework of the IOM regional project “Comprehensive Action Plan for Afghanistan and Neighboring Countries.” Another seminar on the same topic is scheduled for April 22-23, 2025 in the city of Seydi of Lebap region.
In Turkmenistan, the project works for provision of comprehensive support to the Afghan community living in Turkmenistan, especially women and girls, to ensure the long-term sustainable development and social cohesion at the local level. The project successfully operates a Mobile Resource Center that has provided medical services and legal consultations to more than 4,000 beneficiaries from the Afghan and local communities living in the villages of Ahal and Lebap regions. In the village of Parahatchylyk, Ahal region, a medical facility was reopened after renovation and reequipment to provide long-term quality medical services to the Afghan and local communities. Additionally, the project supported vocational training in sewing for 50 women from the Afghan community in Akhal region in 2024. Another 120 Afghan women living in Lebap region will get training in the same profession in 2025.
