Ashgabat Bringing Together UN Resident Coordinators from Central Asia

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan – 17 May 2025 – from 12 to 16 May 2025, Ashgabat hosted a Regional Training for Young Diplomats from Central Asia, bringing together, for the first time, four United Nations Resident Coordinators from the region - Mr. Stephen O'Malley, RC in Kazakhstan, Ms. Antje Grawe, RC in the Kyrgyz Republic, Ms. Kavilmadam Ramaswami Parvathy, RC in Tajikistan and Ms. Sabine Machl, RC in Uzbekistan. The event marked a significant step in strengthening regional cooperation and enhancing the capacity of the next generation of diplomats to address global challenges.
During the training, the Resident Coordinators shared their insights and experiences in key thematic areas, including the UN Agenda 2030, humanitarian and development cooperation, and gender equality. Their participation aimed to inspire young diplomats to pursue multilateral approaches and uphold the values of diplomacy rooted in peace, sustainability, and inclusion.
As part of the program, the Resident Coordinators met with Mr. Rashid Meredov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The meeting underscored Turkmenistan’s commitment to nurturing regional dialogue and investing in youth as essential actors in advancing diplomacy and international cooperation. Mr. Meredov expressed strong support for the initiative, praised relevance of the training and suggested organizing it on an annual basis to further promote regional dialogue and youth engagement in diplomacy.
The presence of the UN Resident Coordinators in Ashgabat and their joint participation in the training highlighted the importance of coordinated UN action in supporting youth engagement, diplomatic capacity-building, and the advancement of the 2030 Agenda. This first-of-its-kind visit by multiple RCs to Turkmenistan demonstrated a unified approach to addressing shared regional priorities and set a strong foundation for continued cooperation across the Central Asian region.
